A Sustainable Workforce Starts With You

Wowsers!  Have you seen something like this happen to a building around you?If your roof fails you, it will ail you in all sorts of awful ways.  First and foremost, a roof cave-in could cause serious injury to people inside the building.  Two, roof failure is a big and expensive mess!  And that’s putting it mildly if your roof fails during a storm.  A wet mess is the worst kind. What’s more, at the end of the day, the fiscal and possible legal impact of a total failure is likely massive compared to the normal cost of regular, proactive maintenance.  So we at Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing think it makes sense to keep up with necessary repairs.

Hi there.  The Chamberlin Man here. Here’s a piece of trivia I found interesting: The National Institute of Building Sciences Whole Building Design Guide reports that the Tower of Babel was built with mortar and tar or pitch as a sealant.  The guide goes on to say that naturally occurring bitumen and asphalt materials have been widely accepted as sealants for many centuries. What may be even more interesting than the long history of “sealants” is the science behind sealant and glazing processes today.  Let me tell you, it’s something else.  Modern sealants were born with the polymer industry in the 1930s, and they’ve been in a constant state of innovation ever since.  Today, there are a plethora of options available – from silicone and acrylic to urethane, butyl and other polymeric types – various formulas have been designed to keep air and moisture out of buildings.  Some even provide sound barriers or firestopping!

Roof systems are often taken for granted until compromised in some way.  Whether a minor leak or a major failure requiring emergency repair, roofs have a way of getting our attention when they fail to protect us from water intrusion.  In an instant we can become very clear on the value of a roof and also its expense.REacting and responding to roof leaks is a big part of the work we do at Chamberlin.  But in the work of our dreams, there would be a more PROactive approach.  Can you picture it?Imagine…a standardized roof maintenance plan coupled with centralized record keeping.  Envision archives of photographs detailing structures and their condition, accessible online, anytime.  Consider the value of having the roofing knowledge necessary to accurately plan ahead and budget for repairs large and small.  What if you had all this AND access to priority response and repair in the event of a water intrusion emergency?

If you know Chamberlin, you know we’re experts in roofing and waterproofing. But we have another core service that often stands in the shadow of some of our more noteworthy projects – garage maintenance and restoration.Sure enough, standing adjacent to the office towers and venues we service is almost always a parking structure that also requires maintenance and repairs. Garages aren’t necessarily the sexiest part of a property, but they often represent a significant part of the overall investment. If parking structures aren’t properly maintained, repairs and restoration can be a tough job. That’s where Chamberlin comes in.Heavy traffic wears out garage surfaces and deteriorates expansion joints that are designed to provide both parking and waterproof protection. Add to traffic the heavy load imposed by a large number of parked vehicles, wet weather, and fluctuating temperatures, and you’ve got a recipe for damage in an area that is easy to overlook when planning for maintenance.

I had the pleasure of shooting the breeze with Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing President and CEO, John Kafka the other day.  As he recalled days gone by, he shared with me what he thinks has been a powerful caveat for the collective success of the company – a refusal to give up.  Even in the most difficult times, he shared, he never wondered IF Chamberlin would succeed, though he perhaps wondered HOW at some particularly low points over the past 36 years.Since “success is not a destination but a journey,” we at Chamberlin continually strive as an organization and as individuals to grow.  We keep in motion, always taking the next step forward as challenges confront us.  Throwing our hands up in the air and giving up is never even a consideration. To that end, I am proud to announce that a handful of key Chamberlin folks have recently taken the next step in their professional journey, having been promoted to Vice President.

The Chamberlin Man here. The most important work we do at Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing is keeping our team safe.  We foster this culture through training, processes, certifications, and real life discussions we call “Safe Performance Self-Assessments.”  Ours is not a policy written down and put in a book on a shelf.  Safety is a living and breathing function of how we approach every. single. thing. we do.Take a look at this 1½-minute clip of a few fellow Chamberlin Men telling us why safety matters to them.Without a healthy team we cannot do our work.  Without a diligent focus on safety, the health of our team would be put at risk.  Risk just isn't in our vocabulary.

Hi there.  The Chamberlin Man here.Climbing ladders is, quite literally, part of our daily regimen at Chamberlin.  There's been a lot of proverbial ladder climbing going on, too.  So, I wanted to recognize some special guys and gals on their recent promotions and to highlight one of several individuals who have recently joined Chamberlin.First, if you own or manage a commercial building in Dallas or North Texas, then you might need to know this Chamberlin fella: Jim Bookhout.  Jim has joined Chamberlin's Dallas operation as the Roof Maintenance and Leak Repair Department Manager.  Jim's career has been spent learning the nuances of the building envelope.  If you have an interest, he can help you put together a proactive plan for maintaining your roofing and waterproofing systems. Find out more about his department's services on our Preventative Roof Maintenance page. Now, if you've been fortunate enough to work with one of these fine people, odds are you can attest to their dedication and expertise.  We're mighty proud to call them Chamberlin men and women.

Hi there. The Chamberlin Man here.Cupid just launched his arrows and the leprechaun will follow closely behind.  Good thing we have these fellas to remind us of the season because Mother Nature seems a bit discombobulated lately. One day we're literally freezing and the next it's a sunny 70.  We've gone from ice skating along our highways to rain boots in a matter of a few hours.  The ever-changing temperature has been wreaking havoc on our lives of late.  Less visibly apparent, but a challenge all the same, is the pressure this crazy weather is having on our roofing and building envelope systems.
