A Sustainable Workforce Starts With You

Hi there.  The Chamberlin Man here.In the current issue of the Chamberlin newsletter is a poignant piece from consultant David Leslie of Building Exterior Solutions that suggests far too many buildings leak and begs the question, “how do we change the industry?”  As in, he has ideas about how we can more often prevent leaks in the first place rather than fix them once happened.  Provocative thinking! This is an article you don't want to miss.  It's chock-full of research and poses a new way to look at the building envelope – proactively rather than reactively.  Chew on just the thought of it for a minute.Don't get our newsletter by some off chance?  Let us know and we'll drop one in the mail to ya.  Isn't it nice to get REAL mail every now and again? You can click on the chart below to enlarge the image.

Hi there.  The Chamberlin Man here.I'm minding my business the other day, just strolling down the street when a gust of wind lifts my fedora right off my head.  It's a hair raising experience that brought to mind the subject of roof uplift.  A lightweight example, but an example nonetheless of what high winds can do to your roof system.  So what would it take for wind uplift to send your roof, or parts of it, flying?  You can find out.  Just read the scoop below!Wind uplift resistance is a hot topic in the roofing industry today.  Wind uplift tests measure the ultimate wind-induced uplift that a roof is able to withstand. Negative pressure tests or bonded uplift tests are options worth considering – especially for those in hurricane-prone areas.Everyday roofing concerns tend to revolve around the more common maintenance issues of water leaks and typical wear and tear, but the effect of high winds on roofs is a more common cause of roofing failures than many realize.

Hi there. The Chamberlin Man here.Every project we take on at Chamberlin becomes part of the company's collective history.  Job sites generate stories that burn marks of major accomplishments, lessons learned or funny anecdotes into our company culture and our approach.  It's especially gratifying when a project story ends with an industry honor.  Such is the case for two recent projects. After standing for over 40 years as landmarks in the Houston skyline, One Shell Plaza (a 50-story high rise) and Two Shell Plaza (a 26-story high rise) were in need of a little TLC.  Chamberlin crews restored the building envelope, replaced leaking roofs, re-waterproofed the pedestrian plaza, and caulked windows and masonry.  The process took a whopping 31 months and a heckuva lot of scaffolding, rigging and high rise expertise.  After such a long haul on site, the work at Shell Plaza was viewed with pride at Chamberlin.  Being recognized in the industry by the Associated Builders and Contractors for Excellence in Construction was icing on the cake.

It's a city park!  Sittin' on a bridge?  It's a green what?!?  A green roof, you say? Now, I guess this is what you call newfangled.  Pretty slick, if I do say so myself.  Klyde Warren Park is a 5-acre green roof installed by Chamberlin.  It has a 215-mil, reinforced hot fluid-applied waterproofing membrane and root barrier system.  That's the part you can't see.  What you CAN see is a beautiful green space and park bridging the freeway below.  Twelve years in the making, this project is one that will be enjoyed for decades to come.  Get a glimpse at how the green roof that is Klyde Warren Park revitalized the urban landscape in Dallas by watching the following three-minute video case study.

Hi there.  The Chamberlin Man here.Company values and good causes are topping the charts of popular corporate initiatives these days.  Guess that makes Chamberlin doubly “en vogue”.  Our longstanding relationship with the Houston nonprofit organization, The WorkFaith Connection, is closely aligned with our company values.Of course, we aren’t involved to demonstrate how hip we are.  We are involved because it's a cause near and dear to our hearts, with a mission similar to our own.  The ROI (return on investment) has been incredible, although not defined by dollars but by lives changed.  Make sense? The WorkFaith Connection is devoted to empowering men and women to find and keep meaningful full-time employment through a faith-based, comprehensive job readiness training and support program.  Chamberlin CEO, John Kafka, serves on the Board of Directors, and the company has hired a number of the program's graduates.  They have proven valuable assets to our team.

Hi there.  The Chamberlin Man here.If you've been around the block in business, the concept of “continual improvement processes” (CIP) have most certainly crossed your path.  While the idea of CIP is complex, the bottom line is simple: we can always improve and should strive to do so.We've long prided ourselves for our excellence in safety at Chamberlin, so with our CIP approach to all facets of our business, we implemented Predictive Solutions' Safety Net technology two years ago.  This has helped us improve the effectiveness of communication surrounding safety audits and our consistency in delivering them.  With clear vision and a good old-fashioned dose of diligence, the Chamberlin team has measured improvements in safety.I'm telling you, safety is more than talk here at Chamberlin.  Our commitment to safety has been monitored and measured in action.  And it's safety in action for which Chamberlin is known.  Matter of fact, our guys and gals were recognized by Predictive Solutions at their May 2013 “Visions” Conference as “Most Improved” out of an elite group of 150 companies.

Hi there.  The Chamberlin Man here. You may very well be interested to know The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing minted a program in 2011 called RoofPoint.  This certification program offers guidelines for the selection of energy efficient roofing systems, including a checklist to evaluate economic and environmental benefits.  As a matter of fact, these benefits could be substantial considering commercial rooftops have an annual potential of 700 trillion BTU in energy savings and 125,000 megawatts of renewable energy production. Here’s the skinny:  RoofPoint is a voluntary, consensus-based green rating system developed by the Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing to provide a means for building owners and designers to select nonresidential roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits.
