Nonfarm payroll employment in July increased by 157,000, seasonally adjusted, from June and by 2,400,000 (1.6%) year-over-year (y/y), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported. Theunemployment rate edged down to 3.9% from 4.0% in June. Construction employment rose by 19,000 for the month and 308,000 (4.4%) y/y to 7,242,000 (the most since May 2008 but 6.3% below the July 2006 peak). Metro employment gains spread widely; material costs are mixed but pay accelerates
Construction employment, not seasonally adjusted, rose from June 2017 to June 2018 in 272 (76%) of the 358 metro areas (including divisions of larger metros) for which the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides construction employment data, fell in 44 (12%) and was unchanged in 42, according to an AGC analysis today.

Construction employment rises strongly in past year; spending increases through May
Nonfarm payroll employment in June increased by 213,000, seasonally adjusted, from May and by 2,374,000 (1.6%) year-over-year (y/y), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. The unemployment rate edged up to 4.0% from 3.8% in May. Construction employment rose by 13,000 for the month and 282,000 (4.1%) y/y to 7,222,000 (the most since May 2008 but 7% below the June 2006 peak).
