Electronic Leak Detection (ELD) is relatively new in the waterproofing world and a far cry from some of the low-tech methods used exclusively before its time. In the simplest terms, ELD uses electricity and an electric circuit to detect and identify problem conditions in waterproofing systems and is capable of pinpointing trouble spots with great precision. I am kind of an old-fashioned guy who sometimes prefers things done the old-fashioned way. For example, we’re fans of a customer service mentality that harkens back to that of a past era here at Chamberlin. As with most anything, ELD isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ integrity testing method for waterproofing. Project specifics have to be considered when determining the best course of action. There’s still plenty of room in the toolbox for spray testing, flood testing, capacitance (impedance) testing, nuclear metering, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. And regardless of the method you employ for testing, application, or maintenance, keep in mind that it will only be as effective as the technician you trust with the job.
