Before the Austin City Council had even taken its final vote to approve a new requirement for private employers to provide paid sick leave to their employees, Republican members of the Texas Legislature were already saying they would attempt to overturn it next year. After the council’s vote, some businesses said they’d be forced to leave the city.

Those were the words of Chuck Gremillion, Executive Director of the Construction Career Collaborative, as he kicked off an event at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston designed to give contractors more information about the kind of help available to them to invest in and retain their workforce.

The past year was a tough one when it comes to the issue of worker misclassification. For about a decade, there was some significant progress in state legislatures across the nation voting to crack down on the problem. It's an issue across industries and is particularly problematic in construction. With a few exceptions, 2017 did not see many new efforts to enforce the law.

Nory Angel, the longtime CEO of SER Jobs for Progress in Houston, is leaving the organization with “mixed emotions.” Angel, who’s been with SER for 14 years – nine of those as CEO – has announced she will be moving on to become the head of a group called “TEACH,” which gives additional education on classroom management to teachers. The current head of TEACH is getting married and moving to another city.
