Thursday, October 20, 2016, was a star-studded night at the Wortham Theater Center as some of the finest in the construction industry were honored at the Associated Builders and Contractors Greater Houston Chapter’s (ABC) annual Excellence in Construction (EIC) Gala. Member companies submitted their best work to compete in various categories while hoping to win the coveted traveling award: Best of Houston Talk about bragging rights! More than 300 guests attended the dinner and ceremony. The charismatic Spencer Tillman, former running back for the Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers, was the event’s emcee. Anxious finalists and guests were treated with light-hearted jokes and words of encouragement as he announced the ICE (top award) and Merit (second place) award winners throughout the night. To keep the voting fair, an outside firm was chosen to decide the Best of Houston award winner. D.E. Harvey Builders was awarded the Best in Houston Award for the Five Oaks Tower/BHP Billiton Tower project.

ABC Greater Houston Celebrates Safety Award Winners during Membership BreakfastAssociated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Greater Houston honored a record of 79 member companies for receiving the Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Award.“I believe ABC members are an exceptional group. Their commitment to providing excellent service is only enhanced by their commitment to a safe working environment,” Russell Hamley, President of ABC Greater Houston Chapter, said.Established in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Committee, the Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program was developed and written by contractors, for contractors.Awards are based on data submitted via STEP applications, essay questions and video interviews with company Presidents/CEOs/Principals about their corporate safety culture.

Having the opportunity to earn a decent wage should be available to everyone who is looking for one.Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Greater Houston and the Construction & Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF) now provide that opportunity to individuals looking to work within the commercial construction industry—an industry looking to train willing and dedicated individuals.JPMorgan Chase released a study, Houston Skills Gap Report, which reported that there are currently 1.4 million middle-skill jobs in Houston, and projected 74,000 new positions to open each year through 2017.

On Friday, May 6, 2016, at Brady’s Landing, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Greater Houston and Construction & Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF) hosted a Membership Breakfast with a theme centering around Workforce Development.  Approximately 200 members, educators and supporters listened to a panel of industry leaders speak about workforce training issues affecting the construction industry.“Our members are committed to working together to develop solutions to solve the skilled labor shortage the industry is facing,” said Russell Hamley, President of the ABC Greater Houston Chapter.

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) proudly announces that three Harris County craft workers won medals at the 29th annual National Craft Championships. Lindsey Irvine won the gold medal in the pipe welding competition while Michael Noschese and Jose Morua won the gold medal and silver medals respectively in the structural welding competition.

Houston, we have a Super Bowl!It has been more than a decade since the Super Bowl was hosted in Houston, Texas. Every year the Super Bowl, the unofficial American holiday, is the NFL’s crowning achievement, heaping massive amounts of attention on whichever city is tasked with hosting the ubiquitous event. More than 70,000 fans attended Super Bowl XLIX. With the guaranteed influx of football fans planning their trip to the Bayou City, many Houstonians may fear the inevitably crowded restaurants, congested roads and overflowing venues during the weeks leading up the event. However, there is a silver lining for all the locals to look forward to when the Super Bowl touches down in 2017.

Texas has room to improve its appeal as a state for contractors to do business according to a scorecard launched by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).“Building America: The Merit Shop Scorecard” reviews and grades state-specific information significant to the success of the commercial and industrial construction industry. The scorecard website, meritshopscorecard.org, identifies states, such as Texas where strategic improvements need to be made to create an environment where merit-shop contractors are well positioned to succeed and states that have created contractor-friendly business environments.

Determination, dedication and diligence…Those words seemed to be the trending topic amongst industry leaders on Thursday, November 19, 2015 as construction industry and educational leaders joined together at the ABC & CMEF Workforce Development Luncheon held at the NRG Center in Houston, Texas. Their goal, you may ask? To inform fellow Houstonians about current workforce development activities, construction career opportunities and the benefits of the NCCER curriculum.The presenters list included Michael Gremillion, Vice President—Houston Office, ISC Constructors, LLC; Mike Holland, Chief Operating Officer for Marek; Donnie McCoy, Senior Operations Manager at Austin Industrial; Renea Dillon, Director at Goose Creek Consolidated ISD and Career & Technical Education Principal at the Stuart Career Center; Ezequiel Garcia, CTHS CTE Department Chair and Welding Instructor at Pasadena ISD; and Eleazar Hinojosa, Fabrication Division Welder at Turner Industries Group.
