A Sustainable Workforce Starts With You

Our industry cannot talk its way out of a problem we behaved our way into. That’s why the ABC Houston Board of Directors has tasked the group’s Industrial Committee with putting forward solid proposals for addressing workforce needs on the Gulf Coast. As part of that, we realize that maintaining a sustainable workforce will require clear career paths for those who choose to become craft professionals. The Industrial Committee’s members have worked hard during recent meetings to formulate recommendations for the full ABC board. The ideas are wide-ranging, including changes to the way things are done on jobsites as well as improving the industry’s image in the eyes of potential future employees and their families.

Creating ongoing solutions for workforce challenges in construction will be an uphill battle, but luckily some of the best minds in the industry have now begun working on it in earnest in the Houston area. The ABC Board of Directors has instructed its Industrial Committee to figure out, with specificity, what needs to be done to create a sustainable workforce going forward. Last week, the committee continued its work focusing on improving construction’s image and recruiting – not just listing problems, but more importantly, coming up with concrete proposals for the full ABC board to discuss and take action on.

Construction in the United States faces a challenge that’s been at the center of an ongoing discussion for most of my career in the industry. But, the challenge of sustaining a workforce has grown from a mere nuisance into a problem that could threaten the viability of recently announced projects. More importantly, it could stand in the way of our country’s ability to reclaim its rightful position as the world leader in manufacturing. It is shameful that we have not held that position in two decades. The ABC board of directors in Houston recognizes the importance of tackling this problem head-on. That’s why ABC’s Industrial Committee will look into opportunities and recommend board action on the issue of the availability of qualified construction craft professionals and the need for coordinated workforce development in the Greater Houston Area.

In recent weeks, oil field services companies have made some pretty big headlines with announcements of major reductions in employees as the price of oil continues to slide. Many of these announcements do not identify the actual numbers of those employees who live in the United States. For those who do, however, the future may not be as bleak as one might think. We are here with a solution. The US construction market is poised to have one of the best growth periods since the early 1970’s. Many believe this renaissance could restore the United States to a position of manufacturing prominence that was lost over the last two decades.
