Balaji Sreenivasan, Founder & CEO, Aurigo Software, shares commentary on what the new administration means for infrastructure in the US:
"With a new Republican administration now set to occupy the White House, the US has a unique opportunity to make significant strides in infrastructure investment – but we can't afford to repeat the same mistakes. The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) was a huge step forward, but its $1.2 trillion allocation fell short of addressing the fundamental issues plaguing America's infrastructure. Only 81.5% of investments made under the Act so far have targeted core infrastructure like roads, bridges, and water systems. The remaining 18.5% was directed to climate-related initiatives, which, while valuable, diluted the impact on core infrastructure needs. More than 60% of IIJA funds have already been spent, and departments of transport (DOTs) still have a mountain to climb.
The American Society of Civil Engineers highlights a $2.6 trillion investment gap in core infrastructure over the next decade, meaning we're only scratching the surface of what's needed. The rising cost of labor and materials, together with rising inflation, have pushed many project budgets beyond reach, making it impossible for the IIJA to deliver its intended impact. The reality is that without substantial new investment, we face a serious risk of economic stagnation, costing the country trillions in lost GDP and job growth. With a $2.6 trillion infrastructure deficit still on the table, now is the time to prioritize investments that directly benefit American workers and American infrastructure, securing a stronger economic future.
Infrastructure is more than a line on a balance sheet; it's a national asset that underpins and uplifts every corner of the economy. The incoming administration needs to take decisive action with bold, creative funding solutions – public bonds, private partnerships, and the removal of red tape – to bridge the investment gap without increasing national debt."
