Construction Users Roundtable 2011 Winter Meeting
I recently attended the Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) 2011 Membership meeting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. CURT is closely aligned with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), but is itself involved at the owner level in addressing issues related to recruiting, training, and retaining a highly skilled construction workforce for the future.
Our welcome speaker was Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, Jay Dardenne. In his speech, he referenced a Science Magazine poll that proclaimed Louisiana as the happiest state. Now I live in the great state of Texas these days and love it, but I’m a Louisiana girl at heart so I was not surprised at this information. It was his optimism about the future of his state that really resonated with the audience of 150 construction professionals focused on the improvement of industry practices. There was a feeling of optimism for the future of our industry present in the crowd.

Construction Crafts
The construction crafts are specialized occupations in the construction industry, each with their own specific skill sets. Construction craft jobs involve the fabrication, assembly, and/or installation of components and materials in buildings, industrial facilities, roads and infrastructure, shipyards, and the oil patch. These jobs and careers often require thoughtful planning, physical strength, hand-eye coordination and the ability to use a wide variety of hand tools, power tools, and mechanized equipment in a safe way. Heads Up on E-Verify
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agency has released two new self-assessment guides for E-Verify Direct Access Users and for E-Verify Web Services Users. As stated in the documents, the purpose is to provide a checklist and guide for voluntary users of the system to
- Detect E-verify activities inconsistent with the E-verify Program
- Detect non-compliant activities
- Resolve internally detected non-compliant activities quickly and efficiently
- Promote proper E-verify use by their users
