Hanging and finishing drywall is not easy. It is a skill that takes 10,000 hours or more to master. Skilled drywall craftsmen and women are usually known only by the quality of the finished product they produce. Their names are seldom known or carved into stone at a finished building, but they are true artists.
I recently wrote about a Workforce Development Graduation honoring 21 Helpers, 19 Mechanics, and 9 Foremen who had recently completed those in-house training programs at Marek. The keynote speaker for the evening was Peter Beard, Senior Vice President for Regional Workforce Development at the Greater Houston Partnership. Mike Holland, Chief Operating Officer at Marek, presented Beard with a certificate of appreciation for his work in the Houston community. It stated:
“The young men and women we are recognizing tonight will relate to their coaches, peers, supervisors, and workforce development staff as advocates for their future. A few weeks ago Marek held their 2015-2016 Workforce Development Graduation to recognize the accomplishments of those who had recently completed their in-house Helper, Mechanic, or Foreman training programs. The evening included a catered dinner for the graduates, their families, and their coaches; a keynote speaker; and a detailed introduction of each graduate highlighting what they learned and which of their coaches were the most influential to them in their training. Women have played major roles in construction for decades. During WWII and the Korean conflict, women had to take the jobs that the men couldn’t take since they were on the front lines. Not only did women build the war machines, they ferried the men to Europe and the Pacific theaters. Many women lost their lives during the wars while doing so. Their model was “Rosie the Riveter” who symbolized the women who played major roles as riveters, sheet metal workers, and steelworkers. They built tanks for the front, built locomotives for the home front and flew major missions around the world. [node:read-more:link]
