Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) voiced its strong support for the Fair and Open Competition Act (S. 622). The bill, introduced by Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), will reduce costs for taxpayers by encouraging all qualified construction companies to compete for federal and federally funded construction projects.

Romero’s bill, House Bill 3357, stipulates that contractors or subcontractors for public work projects can’t misclassify workers as independent contractors. It also ups the current fine for violations from $60 to $90 each day the misclassification persists and requires an audit on pubic work contracts to ensure compliance.

Last month, the Associated Builders and Contractors hosted the 2017 National Craft Championships, a two-day competition for craft profession trainees and apprentices. While the competitors were completing the six-hour hands-on portion of the competition, I spoke with project managers for some of the skilled craft competitions to get an idea of what the competitors were being asked to do.

The producer price index (PPI) for final demand in March, not seasonally adjusted, increased 0.2% from February and 2.3% year-over-year (y/y) from March 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported on Thursday. AGC posted tables and an explanation focusing on construction prices and costs. Final demand includes goods, services and five types of nonresidential buildings that BLS says make up 34% of total construction.

Contractors as individuals come in as many varieties as people themselves do. However, those that become successful builders have two common characteristics, regardless of the markets they serve, the size of the organizations they build, their geographic location or their ability to self-perform. These essential two ingredients are authenticity and appreciation. Both are the hallmarks of true leaders, and both are threshold qualities for those that will become their successors.

Nonfarm payroll employment in March increased by 98,000, seasonally adjusted, from February and by 2,185,000 (1.5%) year-over-year (y/y), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported today. The unemployment rate declined to 4.5% from 4.7% in February. Construction employment increased by 6,000, following a 59,000-job jump in February, the largest one-month gain in 11 years.
